BETTING

Four rounds of betting are consisted in a hand of Texas Holdem poker. The most common form of Holdem would be a limit game, and the first two betting rounds would be set at an arbitrary limit (such as $2), and the last two betting rounds would be at twice the limit of the easy rounds. All bets and raises will be in increments of the limit. Texas Holdem poker games will be referred to by their limits. In a $2/4 limit game, the betting increments in the first two rounds would be $2 and in the last two rounds $4. The four betting rounds and the possible decisions in each round is given in the flowchart on page 10. Seeding the pot: Two poker players are selected who must place blind bets to seed the pot before any cards are dealt.

The poker player who is designated as the small blind will bet half the small limit. Followed by the player to the immediate left of the smaller limit. The small blind bet will be $1 and the big blind will be $2 in a typical $2/4 game. The blind position will be shifted by one seat after each hand.

Round 1–

After the Deal: After all poker players have been dealt their pocket cards, the first round of betting occurs. The player to the immediate left of the big blind will begin betting, he would have to call, meaning he would have to match the bigs blinds bet in order to stay in the game. Betting will proceed to the left. Each poker player would have to call the current bet if they wish to stay in the game. All poker players, including the blinds, will have the option of raising when it will be their turn. Raises, which will be a match and increase of the previous bet, would be in increments of the big blind bet (if the blind bet is $2, then all raises will be in increments of $2). Generally, raises are capped at three: No further raising will be allowed if three raises
were to be made.

When play reaches the small blind, that player would have to make up the difference between the small and big blind bets, plus any raises, if he would wish to stay in the game. The big blind player would have the option to raise (if the cap hadn’t been reached) after all the other players will have acted.

Round 2–

After the flop: The dealer exposes the first three community cards (the flop) on the table after the betting on the pocket cards would be completed. In a $2/4 poker game, betting and raising after the flop would again be in $2 increments. The bets would begin with the small blind and would continue to the left. The small blind could either bet or check (pass on making a bet).

It will be possible for everyone to check after the flop, which would result in no additional money going into the pot, because each player would have the option to check. If a poker player were to check and someone were to bet later on, the player who had checked would get a turn to call the bet or even raise. Raising after checking would be a play referred to as a check-raise. Once a bet were to be made, all players would have to at least call the bet to stay in the game, and raising would be an option. A poker player would have to call all bets and raises to stay in the game, which would result in all remaining players contributing equally to the pot.

Round 3 –

After the Turn: A fourth card (also referred to as the turn) is exposed on the board, after betting on the flop. Play would again start with the small blind that would either check or bet. The increments for bets and raises would be doubled, as the play was to proceed to the left. In a $2/4 Texas Holdem poker game, bets would be $4 after the turn card and raises would be in increments of $4.

Round 4 –

The river: In poker the fifth card (also referred to as the river card) is exposed after the third round of betting. There will be a final round of betting at the same level as the turn card. If more than one poker player would remain after the fourth round of betting, there will be a showdown. The player with the highest-ranked hand would win the pot.
